Project summary
The Restart Project is a London-based social enterprise on a mission to fix our broken relationship with electronics, tackling e-waste by teaching communities to repair their devices rather than throw them away. When they came looking for a redesign, their WordPress site was falling short with high bounce rates, shallow user journeys, underused data, and a front page that buried their most compelling content.
The solution was a custom WordPress theme built from the ground up, designed to reflect the Restart Project’s values at every level. The design is bold, direct, and purposeful, leading with a clear mission statement and a strong call to action that brings the organisation’s cause to the surface immediately. Clean, accessible typography and a high-contrast colour palette ensure the site works for everyone, with accessibility baked into the template rather than bolted on afterwards.
Performance was treated as a core requirement, not an afterthought, keeping page weight low and load times fast in keeping with an organisation that stands against unnecessary consumption. Every technical decision was made with the Restart ethos in mind: building something lean, long-lasting, and maintainable, rather than reaching for plugins and dependencies that would create waste of their own.
The Fixometer, Restart’s tool for tracking devices repaired and CO2 offset, was surfaced prominently to turn their most powerful impact data into a visible, compelling story for visitors. Content from across the Restart ecosystem was brought together into a more coherent user journey, reducing bounce rates and giving supporters more reasons to stay, explore, and get involved.
